Effects of Low and High-intensity Ultrasound on the Physis Plate of the Rabbit Knee Joint

Introduction: Low-intensity doses of ultrasound are currently used in the treatment of various musculoskeletal conditions. However, this ultrasonic therapy may be contraindicated in children due to the potential for growth disturbances, particularly at the epiphyseal plates of the long bones. We hypothesize that current clinical therapeutic doses of ultrasound (0.5 W/cm2) will not cause premature physeal closure, shortened longitudinal growth, or decreased circumferential growth, while high doses (2.2 W/cm2) will have a detrimental effect to the growth plate. The aim of this study is to determine the effects of therapeutic and high-intensity doses of ultrasound on the epiphyseal plates of the rabbit knee joint.
